Business groups respond to Get Britain Working white paper

29 Nov 2024

Business groups, including the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) and the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) have responded to the publication of the government's Get Britain Working white paper.

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) said that employers 'play a key role' in supporting the delivery of the government's objectives. Matthew Percival, Work and Skills Director at the CBI, said: 'There's no doubt that rising taxes and employment costs will make it more difficult for them to do so. That's why it's so important business and government work together to join the dots across the policy landscape in order for policy intent to translate into long-term impact.'

Tina McKenzie, Policy Chair at the FSB, stated that increasing employment is 'ultimately the most sure-fire way to drive up living standards and economic growth'.

She continued: 'Whether it's creating the next generation of driving instructors, office workers or helping solve crucial skills gaps in construction or manufacturing, getting people into work is not just crucial for individuals, but vital for long-term economic growth.

'It is – and always has been – the UK's small businesses who do the lion's share in terms of getting people into work in the private sector.'

Jane Gratton, Deputy Director of Public Policy at the BCC, said: 'Bringing more people back into the workforce is essential to tackle skills shortages and boost economic growth. Government and business need to work together to remove barriers for people who want to work.

'Healthy staff make healthy businesses, but delivery is key. It is important changes are made quickly and effectively, to help firms develop thriving workforces in the years to come.'
